Claude for Teachers: Reclaim 5 Hours a Week
Lesson plans, quiz questions, rubrics, student feedback, parent emails. Teachers spend hours on work that isn't teaching. Claude handles the paperwork.

I've talked to a lot of teachers about what their week looks like. The number that comes up over and over: 5 to 10 hours a week on tasks that aren't teaching. Lesson plans, quiz generation, rubrics, feedback comments, parent emails. Planning work that takes the same amount of time regardless of whether you've taught for 2 years or 20.
Claude doesn't replace any of the actual teaching. It handles the paperwork so you can spend more time on the room.
The Five Things Teachers Use It For
Lesson plans: Give Claude the topic, year group, prior knowledge, learning objective, and time breakdown. It writes a structured lesson plan you can actually use. The plan needs reviewing and adjusting for your specific class, but the structure is there. What used to take 45 minutes takes 5.
Quiz and test questions: Specify the topic, year group, question types (MCQ, short answer, extended), and difficulty distribution across Bloom's taxonomy. Claude generates a question bank in the format you ask for. Ask it to also write the marking guide and you'll have everything you need in one session.
Grading rubrics: Tell Claude the assignment, the year group, the assessment criteria and their weightings, and how many performance levels you need. It produces a rubric you can share with students before they submit. Clear, consistent, and defensible.
Student feedback: This is the biggest time saving. You don't need to write full feedback for every student. Write your shorthand notes as you read each piece, then paste them into Claude with a word count and tone instruction. It turns "strong intro, weak para 3, no evidence, conclusion doesn't close the loop" into 150 words of specific, actionable feedback. You still review it. But you're editing, not writing from scratch.
Parent emails: The ones where you're not sure how to word the concern without it coming across wrong. Describe the situation, what you want the parent to know, what outcome you're hoping for, and the tone. Claude drafts it. You review and personalise before sending.
The Prompt Difference
The thing that makes Claude useful for teaching tasks versus generic is specificity. "Write a lesson plan about fractions" produces a generic plan you'd have to rewrite. "Write a 45-minute Year 5 maths lesson introducing equivalent fractions for the first time, for students who can already add fractions with the same denominator, with a 5-minute warm-up, 15-minute direct instruction, 15-minute guided practice, and an exit ticket" produces something teachable.
The more Claude knows about your students, your subject, and your context, the more useful the output.
What Claude Cannot Do
It doesn't know your students. You know that one student who needs the scaffold framed as a choice rather than a support because they'll refuse it otherwise. You know which parent needs a phone call before the email. You know which topic your class struggled with last term that this one builds on.
The judgment about what this class needs is yours. Claude just removes the blank-page work so you have more capacity to apply that judgment.
